The film is based on the novel of the same name by Alex Garland. The reason why young American Richard (Leonardo Di Caprio) came to Thailand in search of adventure is his desire to find and connect with the real thing in this artificial world. In Bangkok, he meets with a young French couple; Françoise and Etienne and also with Daffy who tells him about a hidden paradise, an island not occupied by tourists and then commits suicide leaving a map to the island for Richard. Rischard convinces Etienne and Françoise to go to the island together and three of them travel to the island. This is the story of their travel to the island and their adventures there.

He struggles to make peace with his past and go on a journey to his home of south Louisiana to reunite with his ex-wife he left behind. Along the journey, he meets with two teenagers; Martine and Gordy and takes the road with them.
