A Quarantine Activity: “Road / Travel” Movies – Part 1

Get tired of being stuck in the house?

Me too.

Starting with the pandemic in the very first days of 2020, most of us stopped travelling although we love it. It is seen that this will continue for a while until we feel safe to travel. If we cannot travel, we can watch films about being on the road and travelling, and imagine our travel plans for the future. So, let me suggest to you some of my favorite films about being on the road and travelling.

Into the Wild (2007)

Into the Wild is an adaptation from the book of Jon Krakauer which is a real life story of Christopher McCandless. It is a very fascinating film and being a real life story makes the story even more impressive. After graduating from a prestigious university, Christopher tells his family that this is not the life he wants, something is missing and wrong. The young man embarks on a long journey towards a completely different life, donating all his assets to charity and leaving everything he has at home. During and after this journey that ends in the desolate forests of Alaska, Christopher will experience the meaning of life and the inevitability of death by meeting some people who will radically change his life. This “must watch” film will take you in it and you will go on a journey with Christopher to Alaska and to life.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

The only dream of sweet Olive, the youngest member of the Hoover family, is to participate in a beauty contest on the other side of the country. Diametrically opposed members of the family pile into an old van and take the road towards the dream of little Olive. While you are following all this beautiful road with them, you are also rediscovering what it means to be a family with them. While walking this beautiful path with the Hoover family; you are also beginning to rethink the concepts of “winning” and “losing”.

Thelma & Louise (1991)

Thelma is a confused housewife and Louise is a waitress. These two women decide to leave their normal life behind, jump in the car and hit the road. This weekend trip turned into a disaster and a flight story. In their first stop, they go to a bar and dance all night, however a man tries to rape Thelma and Louise come to help and murder the man. Starting from this point, everything starts to roll down and Thelma and Louise start to escape from the police. This magnificent road movie is quite a feminist movie compared to the time it was shot.

The Bucket List (2007)

The friendship between the old, sick and diametrically opposed two men at the cancer center turns into a journey when they create a list of things they want to do in their remaining lives. You will witness the spectacular acting of Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. You feel warm with the clever dialogues and sincerity of these two men who fled the cancer center and hit the road to achieve what they wanted to do.

Let me continue my suggestions on the next blog post and let’s watch these ones until next time!

See you on the next post.

Anıl Uzun!
